Steps in the Infertility Process

There are three major steps to the treatment of infertility. One of these steps is the HSG test. HSG or Hysterosalpingogram is a test commonly preformed on women who are having issues with fertility. Some women are apprehensive about this test, fearing the unknown, but there is little to be worried about…

WHAT IS HSG?

HSG is an X-ray test that looks at the viability of the fallopian tubes and uterus. It is used to view the fallopian tubes, assessing whether they are open or blocked. It also views the uterus to make sure that the uterus is of normal shape and that there is no scar tissue, fibroids, or polyps.

HOW DOES HSG WORK?

The body is designed to produce a current that pushes the egg into the fallopian tube, then fertilization occurs when the sperm and the egg meet. For women struggling with infertility it is important to confirm that the fallopian tubes and uterus are open and clear.

The test is painless and quick. The entire appointment will take only 30-45 minutes. The test should be scheduled several days after your menstrual cycle ends. The test itself will consist of a thin tube being inserted into the vagina and uterus. The path of the dye will show any blockages, injuries or an abnormal structure of the uterus or fallopian tubes, which would prevent the sperm from traveling and fertilizing the egg.

The test preformed is similar to that of a Pap smear. The area of the cervix is cleaned with a solution of antiseptic, a thin tube or catheter is inserted and only two to three teaspoons of fluid is placed into the tube. The patient will be lying flat as the technician watches as the dye fills the uterus and eventually travels through the fallopian tubes. The photos or x-rays will show each step of the path of the dye. If everything is clear, the fallopian tubes will fill and the dye will spill into the abdomen.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TESTING

The X-rays will then be sent to the physician for review. Should the test reveal that there is a blockage, the doctor will discuss with you the best course of action. If the fallopian tubes and uterus are clear, your doctor will also discuss the next course of action in determining the cause of infertility.

In the meantime, you are able to drive yourself home as sedation is not part of the process, and the majority of patients return to work immediately. Please be aware that because the dye can harm or displace a fetus, tests will be run prior to the HSG test, to make absolutely sure the patient is not already pregnant. Some cramping, aching discomfort can occur, as well as spotting and/or discharge. This is absolutely normal and should not be cause for worry. Ibuprofen can typically alleviate this discomfort.
